Another hotel used for our Bavaria & Austrian Alps driving tour is Travel Charme Fürstenhaus Am Achensee in Pertisau, Austria. This beautiful four star superior spa hotel has one of the best locations at Achensee because of its lake front position. A lake that really is as green as the photos show. During summertime it is a popular destination for kitesurfing, windsurfing and sailing because of the strong winds that makes this the ideal place for such sports. Fürstenhaus Am Achensee also provides their guests with 3000m2 of modern spa and wellness facilities, a nice restaurant and “Beer Garden”, and good hiking and golf possibilities nearby. During the wintertime guests arrive to Pertisau for cross-country skiing, and there is also a small ski slope in the town suitable for beginners.
In a region with a broad range of activities like hiking, kitesurfing and golf, and of course good driving roads
For the traveller in search of good driving roads the location of Fürstenhaus Am Achensee will not disappoint you. Grossglockner is a three hour drive away so Fürstenhaus Am Achensee might not be a top choice for driving this particular road, but there are plenty of other mountain roads in Austria a little closer. 27 km north you find the German Alpine Road just after crossing the border to Germany, a drive that is also part of our Ultimate Drives tour. In less than two hours you have reached the end of Kaunertaler Glacier Road, a scenic drive up to Tyrol’s youngest glacier. Hahntennjoch (1894m) is a 120 km drive away, and if you wish to stay closer there are nice mountain roads already around Pertisau to be enjoyed.
Although the region is good for driving we believe the typical Fürstenhaus Am Achensee guest is an outdoors person, or someone who come for the spa. This is what this hotel and location is ideal for. You can wake up in the morning and go down for a long breakfast with lake view in the morning sun. Later you can walk by the lake or put on hiking shoes and go explore the mountains around, by foot or with the Karwendel cable car that takes you up on Zwölferkopf (1480m). Once you have reached the top you can start a hike down, or simply relax with a panoramic view over the lake. There are also other activities here like golf, paragliding and watersports. Upon return to the hotel it is time to relax in the spa, maybe with a massage, before getting prepared for an evening dinner at the hotel restaurant.
You have everything you need inside one big building. If you one day want something else and want to get away from the hotel for a night out, you have options. Pertisau has a few restaurants to choose from but you could also do a short drive and go explore some of the nearby towns, like Maurach or Eben Am Achensee. We had dinner at the restaurant with a menu prepared using many local products of the region. The food was of great quality and the atmosphere in the restaurant very cosy on a busy night, with the friendly and professional staff always making sure you have everything you need.
Although a lake view room with balcony is incredible in the summer, their mountain view rooms are very popular during wintertime and we can understand why. The green mountains around the valley are beautiful in their summer shape but we can imagine these mountain landscapes become even more majestic when covered in snow. Although a winter morning mist over a lake does not sound like a bad view to wake up to either.
At Fürstenhaus Am Achensee they have a very high percentage of returning customers, with the majority coming from German speaking countries. You can sense this from the hotel atmosphere. In the lobby you might see staff or the hotel manager greeting and chatting with arriving or leaving guests – old friends, new friends. There are guests who return to the same room each year, and there are guests who year after year choose to spend their Christmas Eve at Fürstenhaus Am Achensee. Because at the end of the day one of the main reasons why you wish to return to this hotel is because of the wonderful staff. That very professional, warm and welcoming staff that makes you feel like you are part of one big family from the very first moment you arrive at the hotel.
