Grossglockner Driving Tour

Our Grossglockner Driving Tour gives you the opportunity to drive possibly the greatest driving road in Europe not once, but twice as part of a three-night package touring the beautiful Bavarian and Austrian Alps.

The trip starts in the vibrant city of Munich and includes two full days of driving in the German & Austrian Alps to the south of the city.  Highlights of the tour include a wonderful stretch of de-restricted (no speed limit) German Autobahn, the scenic German Alpine Road, the spectacular Hohe Tauern National Park (the largest National Park in western Europe and the home to the spectacular Kriml Waterfalls, highest in Europe) and of course the Grossglockner Pass.  This drive is naturally the highlight of the trip, the road rises to a height of more than 2400M, and in our opinion all-around the greatest mountain road in the Alps - you also get the opportunity to visit the Glacier at the summit of the pass.

Basing yourself in Munich for the first and last evenings, there is, of course also the possibility to explore this beautiful city, or even take a day trip/excursion to BMW Welt, the stunning home, museum, and visitor center of BMW.

Grossglockner Driving Tour

Day 1 - Arrive in Munich

Arrive into the beautiful city of Munich, and head to the recently opened 5 Star Andaz by Hyatt hotel - perfectly located within a 10min walk of both the main rail station and the wonderful old town.  This recent addition to the 5-star scene boasts its own spa, indoor pool, and numerous restaurants.

After checking in, take time to enjoy and rest of the day/evening visiting Munich taking in the best cultural sites and gastronomic treats.

Room type: Twin / double room

Day 2 -  Autobahn & Grossglockner Pass

The following morning your car will be delivered directly to the hotel where you will be briefed by a member of our team on the car, the tour, and the navigation. After the briefing, you will be on your way.....the first stage of the tour will take you south from the city, and onto a beautiful stretch of de-restricted Autobahn, which then takes you through Bavaria where you will skirt along the super scenic German Alpine Road, before dipping south and into Austria.

Next, you will head along to the beautiful lakeside resort of Zell am See for lunch, at the exclusive Schloss Prielau - a small castle/hotel owned by the Porsche family.

Gross Glockner Mountain Pass

After lunch, the tour then continues directly onto the Grossglockner, the highest and longest mountain pass in Austria, this is quite simply two hours of driving Nirvana. Stop at the summit of the pass for pictures and to draw breath - you can also enjoy views of the Grossglockner Glacier from the restaurant and terrace at the summit.

Gross Glockner Tour - Grand Hotel Lienz

Now, continuing south, down the pass into the Austrian Tyrol, and the most southerly town in Austria, picture postcard perfect Lienz where you will be based for the evening.

Overnight: 5 Star Grandhotel, Lienz, Austria
Room type: Superior Suite, river views

Day 3 - The High Tauern  Park & Bavarian Lakes

Tour two starts with a second run across the pass - driving the pass in the opposite direction is a completely different experience, plus you drive the pass at the best time of the day, early morning when you can enjoy the best light of all.  After crossing the pass, turning west and into the heart of the High Tauern National Park, the largest National Park in Europe.  Here you can expect to enjoy sweeping valleys, the Krimml waterfalls, and stunning mountain backdrops.

The tour then continues up to the ski resort of Kitzbuhel, where you will stop for lunch. Coffees over, head across the border, and back into Germany into the Bavarian Alps, stopping at the lakeside resort of Walachsee for afternoon teas, before continuing through the lakes region, skirting two further lakes, before re-joining the Autobahn north, and heading directly back to your hotel in Munich, where the tour will end.

Your car will be collected from the hotel, we then recommend you head out into the city to enjoy the unique nighttime atmosphere Munich has to offer, including a visit to one of the legendary beer halls where you can sample the finest beers in the world...some say!

Overnight: 5 Star Superior Andaz Schwabinger Munich
Room type: Twin / double room

Day 4 - Day at leisure / BMW Welt

On your final day, there is a chance to enjoy the beautiful historic city of Munich, with its delightful old town, shopping malls, and beer halls.

Alternatively, you can take a short taxi ride from the hotel to BMW Welt, the museum and experience center of BMW, which are of course headquartered in Munich.
