Road Trip in Wales
If you are looking for a perfect luxury road trip in the UK, look no further than the beautiful country of Wales, which offers some of the finest driving roads and sights anywhere - from mountains to lakes, to castles, Wales has it all.
This fully planned three-day road trip starts in the south, with an overnight in the beautiful Brecon Beacons National Park. After an evening of tranquility, you will set off to explore the peaks and sweeping mountain roads of the Brecons, taking a gourmet pub lunch in the heart of the region and visiting one of the best Welsh whiskey distilleries along the way. Next, turn north and head into the tranquil Elan Valley, where you are transported back to the Victorian age, with 6 stunning reservoirs, and some of the most architecturally inspiring dams anywhere in the UK. Exit the valley, and continue north to the Snowdonia National Park, where you spend an overnight at the finest boutique luxury hotel in North Wales. The following day enjoy a scenic loop around the Snowdonia National Park, with endless scenic drives and stunning mountain roads - including what is quite possibly the most dramatic stretch of road in the UK, the Llanberis Pass. This final day of driving has it all!
Luxury Road Trip in Wales
Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1 - Arrive Brecon Beacons
Arrive into the heart of the Brecon Beacons, where you will spend your first evening at the award-winning Gliffaes Country House Hotel.
Gliffaes is one of the finest hotels in South Wales, established in part thanks to our unrivaled reputation as a true country house and fishing hotel. You’ll discover Gliffaes off the beaten track, tucked away surrounded by the rolling hills of the Black Mountains. Set in 33 acres of stunning grounds and mature woodlands, Gliffaes boasts its own stretch of river Usk and a 19th Century arboretum. No other hotels in the Brecon Beacons can compete with our reputation of having some of the best fly fishing in the UK.
Depending on your time of arrival, we can highly recommend the hotels afternoon tea, enjoying stunning views of the Black Mountains.
OVERNIGHT: 4 Star Superior Gliffaes Country House
Double rooms with mountain views
Day 2 - Brecon Beacons & Elan Valley
The following morning after a hearty Welsh breakfast you will be ready to start your road trip. The journey begins with a loop around the finest mountain roads of the Brecon Beacons where you will drive a loop of two of the best passes in these parts, including the legendary (Top Gear) Black Mountain Pass. Along the way, make a visit to the Whiskey Distillery at Penderyn, visit the Henrhyd waterfalls, and visit Llangorse Lake, the largest natural lake in Wales. Next, exit north from the Brecons towards the Elan Valley - the incredible 72-square-mile Elan Valley in Powys is the perfect playground for cars and is voted among the top 10 greatest drives in Britain.
Lunch will be taken in the heart of the Elan valley, at a wonderful local tea house. The Elan Valley is famous for its network of Victorian dams (6 in total) and reservoirs created to supply the people of Birmingham, carrying water roughly 73 miles east to the Frankley Reservoir and is certainly one of the most scenic parts of this incredible country.
The driving route will take you along the entire length of the valley, past the reservoirs with their gothic Victorian dams, taking lunch adjacent to the valley. After lunch, the tour continues north towards Snowdonia, skirting the outer edges of the park, where the roads are famously quiet, the perfect testing ground for any keen driver.
The final stretch of the drive towards Snowdonia takes you along the legendary Mach Loop, where the RAF and other airforces make their training runs - sightings of the jets are never guaranteed, but we do pick out a perfect vantage point to park up and enjoy the (potential) views.
Complete your drive with a run through the park on the scenic A4212 past the tranquil lake of Agon Tryweryn, spending your second evening in the heart of the National Park staying at Pale Hall, without doubt, the number 1 luxury boutique hotel in northern Wales. Palé Hall is the perfect destination for a quiet retreat, comfort, and culinary indulgence. Situated in the tranquil Dee valley this grand, historic, high Victorian mansion has an idyllic woodland garden rolling down to the banks of the river.
OVERNIGHT: 5 Star Pale Hall, Snowdonia
Double rooms with garden views
Day 3 - Snowdonia National Park
Your second scenic drive is all about exploring the very best of the Snowdonia National Park, featuring the highest mountain in the UK outside of Scotland, at an impressive 1085M. First stop is a visit to what we can only call "a little part of Austria" which is the stunning Lake Vyrnwy (below) - the views across this lake from the terrace of the impressive Lake Vyrnwy Hotel and Spa are in our view some of the finest you will experience anywhere in the UK - quite simply breathtaking.
If you can, be sure to rise early, as the light can be absolutely fantastic as you make your way around Snowdonia, and of course, the traffic remains light (weekends) until mid-morning when day-trippers arrive, so do be sure to take advantage of the fact you can be on the roads nice and early.
The drive itself will be a clockwise loop around the park, with the summit of Snowdonia often in the distance. You will tackle the most dramatic road in the park, the Llanberis Pass, as well as the Crimea pass, and our favorite road in Wales, the B4391. Along the way some highlights you will visit include the village of Harlech, with its impressive castle, the market town of Bala and the village of Beddgelert, a picturesque and unspoilt mountain village in the heart of the park as well as Dolbadarn Castle, adjacent to the lake of Peris
Lunch is then taken in the heart of the park overlooking Lake Vyrnwy - one of the most picture-postcard settings in the whole of the UK, with a setting that would make you think you are in the Austrian Alps. After lunch, loopback south into Mid Wales, where there is time to visit the Clywedog Reservoir, another stunning part of middle Wales, before finishing the drive back at Pale Hall, where it is possible to enjoy the late afternoon teas!
