Bavarian Alps & Neuschwanstein Road Trip

Our Germany & Austrian Alps Road Trip takes you on a journey through the lakes, mountain passes, and historic cities of southern Germany and the beautiful Austrian Alps. You will also get to drive the iconic Grossglockner Mountain Pass on this trip.

This 5-night road trip starts in Munich and includes 4 full days of driving tours. Along the way, you will spend an evening in the city of Salzburg and get the opportunity to visit the Red Bull museum, Hangar-7. En route back to Munich, you will also stop at the most romantic and famous castle in the world, the Neuschwanenstein castle, where you will enjoy a tour before you drive back to Munich after lunch. It's our opinion that the Austrians build the most "driver-friendly" roads anywhere in Europe with their beautifully cambered bends, glass-smooth tarmac, and a system of tolls through the many of the national parks and passes that help dramatically reduce the amount of traffic.

In short, this tour is a driver’s paradise!

Hint: If you have an extra day, ask us about an extension into the Dolomites and over the Stelvio Pass!

Bavarian Alps & Neuschwanstein Road Trip

Day 1 - Arrival & Sightseeing in Munich

Day 2 - Drive 1: Bavaria & Lake Chiem

In the morning, your German & Austrian Alps Road Trip will officially begin. You start by heading into the heart of the Bavarian region of Germany. Initially, you will take a stretch of the legendary German Autobahn directly to Lake Chiem, where the scenic alpine roads start. At Lake Chiem, visit the magnificent Herrenchiemsee palace on one of the lake's islands and then head into town for lunch overlooking the lake. After lunch, your tour takes you onto the first scenic alpine road through the Bavarian Alps, a stunning 70 km stretch of sweeping roads and lower mountain passes. Head directly to Hangar-7, just east of the city of Salzburg, where you will visit the exhibition of the historical Flying Red Bulls aircraft fleet and a collection of Formula 1 race cars. Then, head back into the beautiful Berchtesgaden region, for an overnight stay in the wonderful oasis hotel Kempinski Berchtesgaden

Overnight Hotel: 5-Star Kempinski Berchesgarden

Day 3 - Drive 2: The Tyrol & Grossglockner Alpine Road

On Day 3 you will drive some of the most spectacular roads and mountain passes in the Alps as you make your way south into the Austrian Tyrol region. The Grossglockner Alpine Road is the highest mountain pass in the Austrian Alps with spectacular views to the Grossglockner Mountain, which rises to almost 3800 m. In the evening, you will stay in the medieval town of Lienz in the Austrian state of Tyrol.

Overnight Hotel: 5-Star Dolomitengolf Suites, Lienz, Austria

Day 4 - Drive 3: Tour of Austrian Tyrol & Felberntauernstrasse

Head through the beautiful Hochtauern National Park of the Austrian Tyrol, the largest natural reserve in Western Europe. Along the fantastic Felberntauernstrasse, you will enjoy lunch and the beautiful scenery of the park. This area is one of the most unspoiled regions of Austria, and the day is all about immersing yourself in the beautiful Southern Tyrol. Make sure you stop for lots of pictures along the way! Planned stops will include the 380 m high Krimmler Wasserfälle, then past Archensee, and then along the German Alpine Road east to Fussen, home of the Neuschwanstein Castle for the night.

Overnight Hotel: 4-Star Das König Ludwig Spa Resort
