French Alsace Wine & Castles Driving Tour

If you love deserted forest trails, appreciate the food and fine wines of France, this tour will be perfect for you.

Our French Alsace Driving Tour combines the fast and sweeping forest trails of Germany's Black Forest with the wine regions / routes in the beautiful Vosges Mountains of the Alsace region in eastern France.

This 4-night trip starts from Zurich and includes 3 full days of driving. Travel through the heart of the Black Forest to the spa resort of Baden Baden for an evening, cross the border into France and follow the famous 'wine route' through Alsace, make a short loop of the Vosges mountains, and stay in the historic city of Colmar. The final drive includes another short stretch in the mountains before turning back through the Black Forest to Zurich.

French Alsace Wine & Castles Driving Tour

Day 1 - Arrive in Zurich

Arrive in Zurich and check into your boutique hotel. Take the tram to the old town (5 minutes) and spend the afternoon exploring the cafes and boutiques, or take a stroll along the world-famous Bahnhofstrasse.

Day 2 - North to Strasburg via the German Black Forest 

In the morning your car will be delivered to your hotel, and you'll be ready to hit the road in style! The first drive takes you from Zurich to the Rhine, a natural border between Switzerland and Germany. You'll cross the border at the beautiful village of Kaisersthul, with castles on either side of the river. Burst into the Black Forest with a run up one of the sweeping lower mountain passes, then down to the beautiful Lake Schulesee. Continue driving deeper into the forest and around Mount Feldberg, the highest peak in the forest, then to the town of Triberg. At Triberg you will stop up to visit the Triberg Falls, the highest waterfall in Germany, that cascade down to the village some 300 m below. From here cross the border into France, and head to the historic city of Strasbourg where you will stay for the evening.

Day 3 – The Alsatian Wine route and the Vosges mountains

On Day 3, you will pass through wine regions and small wine houses, where you can stop to stock up on some of the finest wines in France. Continue into the Vosges mountains to discover Alsatian Castles and dense forest, and visit some of the famous pretty villages of Alsace. The tour includes a visit to the most famous fortified middle age castle of the region, the Haut Koenigsbourg. After visiting the castle, you can admire the great views over the valley, the mountains and the vineyards that will be your playground for the day ahead! Spend some time in the magnificent villages of Bergheim, Ribeauvillé and Kaysersberg. After lunch, hit the road to the mountains for fantastic deserted roads with views of beautiful mountain lakes and some very good turns. Eventually you will make your way to Colmar where you will stop for your third night.

Day 4 – Colmar to Zurich via Vosges Mountains and Automobile Museum

Starting in romantic Colmar, continue the tour through vineyards and mountains, and then stop at the highest point of the Vosges mountains (Grand Ballon 1,424 m) for a coffee break. You will then head to Mulhouse to visit the largest car museum in Europe, offering a fantastic racing cars collection and the largest Bugatti collection (Collection Schlumpf) in the world! Afterwards, continue along the Wehr River Valley, which was carved out during the ice age, and has gorge-like rock formations on either side. The sound of the car engine reverberating off these walls is a perfect way to complete the run back to the border and into Germany. At the border, visit the famous Holz Brucke, the longest covered wooden footbridge in Europe, for drinks and sightseeing before  going back to Zurich where the car will be collected that evening at your hotel.

Day 5 - Final Day in Zurich

Spend the last day taking in the sights and attractions of Zurich before your departure.
