Dolomites & Austrian Alps Driving Tour from Munich

The Italian Dolomites, a UNESCO-protected region in central Europe, boasts without doubt the most dramatic sights and mountain peaks anywhere in the Alps.

This 4-night adventure takes you through three countries and along some of our favorite driving roads in Europe as you make a visit to this spectacular region of Italy.  The tour starts north of the Dolomites, in the vibrant city of Munich, where you can take in the local atmosphere, museum scene, shops and beer halls.  Now, head out on a three-day driving loop that includes highlights like the sweeping German Alpine Road, some high-speed de-restricted autobahn, and some stunning Bavarian Lakes. But this is just the warm up. Now throw in the likes of the Grossglockner Pass (Austria's highest road), cable cars up to a summit lunch, and the Great Dolomite Road, this trip is quite simply nonstop views and gorgeous roads.

Dolomites & Austrian Alps Driving Tour

Day 1 - Arrive in Munich

Arrive at the International Airport of Munich and transfer to your hotel adjacent to Motorworld Munich. After checking in, explore Munich Motorworld, visit the incredible BMW Museum nearby, or head downtown to Munich's old town. The metro station is directly outside the hotel and is only a 15-minute tram ride to the heart of the old town.

Overnight Hotel: 4-Star Ameron Motorworld

Day 2 - German Alpine Road & Grossglockner

The following morning your car will be delivered directly to the hotel. The first stage of the tour will take you south from the city, and onto a beautiful stretch of de-restricted Autobahn, which then takes you through Bavaria where you will skirt along the super scenic German Alpine Road before dipping into Austria. Next, you will head along to the exclusive Schloss Prielau, a small castle/hotel owned by the Porsche family. After lunch, the tour continues on the Grossglockner, the highest and longest mountain pass in Austria. This is quite simply two hours of driving Nirvana. Finally, continue down the pass into the Austrian Tyrol and the picture-postcard town of Lienz.

Overnight Hotel: 5-Star Dolomitengolfe Suites, Lienz, Austria
(note in high season July / August you will stay at the 5 Star Grand Hotel Lienz as the Dolomite Suites require 2 nights stay)

Day 3 - The Great Dolomite Road

On Day 3 you will drive some of the most spectacular roads and see some of the most dramatic and famous views of the jagged Dolomite peaks. From Lienz, head across the border to Tre Cime de Lavaredo via Passo Tre Croci. These triplet peaks are some of the most photographed in the world. After a coffee stop and some shopping in the "wealthy playground" ski town of Cortina d'Ampezzo, there are several more mountain passes back to back as you wind around the massive Mount Piz Boe. Lunch is its own event with a cable car ride up to Seceda Ridge with an unbeatable view. Finally, wind into the northern reaches of the Park to your hotel at the end of a dead-end valley.

Overnight Hotel: 5-Star Tenne Lodges, Dolomites

Day 4 - Italian Tyrol and Seefeld Ski Region

For the final drive, you'll begin by taking a run over Jaufenpass, offering stunning views from 2000m across the Dolomites to the south, and the Austrian Alps to the north.  Next take the Timmelsjoch Pass across the border into Austria and stop at the top at the James Bond featured ICE Q Restaurant for coffee. After lunch in the world famous ski town of Seefeld, there's time to head around 2 of the most beautiful Bavarian Lakes, before jumping on a great stretch of de-restricted Autobahn back to Munich.

Overnight Hotel: 4-Star Ameron Motorworld

Day 5 – Final Day in the City of Munich

Take the metro downtown and spend some time on your final day in Munich before departing the city.  Munich is a vibrant city, with parks, museums and a great shopping quarter.  Be sure to visit the famous Marienplatz at the center of the old town, and visit/dine at one of the nearby beerhalls

Note on Munich Hotels: If you prefer to be located downtown for the final night, and have us pick the car up from the city, that's also possible, we have a few selections including the Kempinski, please ask for more details when making an enquiry.
